Variable Agama

The oriental garden lizard, also known as the eastern garden lizard, bloodsucker, or changeable lizard, is a captivating reptile native to the Indo-Malayan region, though it has also spread to other parts of the world. This insectivorous lizard is renowned for its striking sexual dimorphism, particularly evident during the breeding season when males display a vivid red throat, making them easy to identify. They can grow to over 10 cm in length and possess the remarkable ability to change their color from brownish hues to bright red or even black.

Frequently found in hedges and trees, these lizards are distinguished by their long, stiff tails and the unique capability to move each eye independently, adding a distinct charm to their appearance. Unlike some other lizard species, they do not detach their tails when threatened but do shed their skin regularly.

These adaptable lizards have successfully spread to various countries in Asia and have even been introduced to places like the United States and Singapore. They thrive in urban environments and are not considered endangered. Their diet primarily consists of insects and small vertebrates. Regarding reproduction, they lay their eggs in moist soil, and after approximately 6-7 weeks, the young lizards hatch.
