Facts About Nepali tea
Nepali tea is a distinctive variety made from plants cultivated in the picturesque landscapes of Nepal. While it shares some similarities with Darjeeling tea due to their close geographical proximity, Nepali tea boasts unique characteristics that set it apart. The tea industry in Nepal primarily produces two main types: Orthodox tea and Crush, Tear, Curl (CTC) tea.
Orthodox tea is grown in Nepal’s mountainous regions and is renowned for its four harvesting seasons, known as flushes: first, second, monsoon, and autumn. In contrast, CTC tea is cultivated in the lower-altitude plains and typically has a more consistent flavor and color.
Historically, the development of Nepal's tea industry was hindered by the Rana Dynasty and political instability. However, post-1950s political reforms facilitated investment and growth in the sector. The Nepal Tea Development Corporation (NTDC) played a significant role in promoting tea cultivation during this period, and the privatization of the industry in the late 1990s further boosted production and exports.
Today, Nepal produces approximately 16.29 million kilograms of tea annually, with exports reaching various countries worldwide. Associations such as the Himalayan Orthodox Tea Producers Association (HOTPA) and the National Tea and Coffee Development Board (NTCDB) have been instrumental in enhancing the quality and marketing of Nepali tea. The cultivation of orthodox tea in hilly regions has notably benefited small farmers, helping to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including the need to reduce pesticide use and achieve organic certification, which can enhance trade potential. The shift towards growing orthodox tea as a cash crop has had positive economic effects, providing livelihoods and reducing poverty for many farmers. Looking ahead, there are promising opportunities for growth in tea exports. Efforts continue to improve productivity, add value through processing, and tap into premium markets to increase profitability.
