Ceres
Facts and practical information
The Ceres is a corn and flour mill in Spijk, Groningen.
The mill was built in 1839 by the Houtman family. Until about 1987, a descendant of this family was active at this mill. Since then, volunteer millers have been active. The mill is very unique in terms of its equipment and is used as a teaching mill for peeling. Nowadays it is owned by the Groninger Landscape Foundation.
Another special feature of this mill is that the wooden substructure rests on stone posts, tapered blocks that act as foundations for the mill body. In addition to a thatched roof.
The mill is named after Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and grain.
Saturday in the odd weeks from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. the mill can be visited.
