De Vriendschap, Winsum
Facts and practical information
De Vriendschap is a corn mill in the village of Winsum in the north of the province of Groningen.
The mill was built in 1801 as a peeling mill, probably using a mill from Mensingeweer. Constructively, the mill was built purely as a hulling mill. However, during the Second World War both hulling stones were removed and afterwards a pair of grinding stones was installed. Due to the lack of a stone loft, the grinding stones are located below the level of the scaffolding, so that the drive is provided by means of an extra transmission, which is quite unique. The mill was equipped with the self swaying system. In 2006, the mill was shut down because of its poor condition. Between 2008 and 2011 the mill was restored bit by bit and is now fully millable again. The mill, now owned by the Molenstichting Winsum, is regularly put into operation by volunteers.
