Sint-Petrus' Stoel van Antiochiëkerk, Uden
Facts and practical information
Saint Peter's Chair of Antioch Church, also known as Saint Peter's Church, is a Roman Catholic church in the Dutch town of Uden. The church is dedicated to the Cathedra of the holy apostle Peter.
The first St. Petrus church in Uden dates back to about 1300. At the end of the 19th century there was a wish to renew the presbytery. This wish was fulfilled and a new presbytery was built on the Kapelstraat. Because the parish church burned down in 1886, the diocese decided to demolish the remainder and build a new church. Final approval followed in 1887 and in the following years the church was built to the design of Carl Weber. The church was consecrated in 1890, even before it was completed, by Adrianus Godschalk, the Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch. The two spires were completed after the consecration. In 1902 the new rectory was completed and that is still the rectory of the parish of Saint Peter today.
The church is set up as a three-aisled cruciform basilica. The architectural style falls between neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic architecture. The nave, with a gabled roof, is flanked by two side aisles. The church has a distinctive eight-sided domed tower above the crossing, making it a cross-domed church. The roof is constructed so that the inside looks like a star. On the east side are two narrow, eight-sided towers equipped with a constricted needle spire. One of the bells was cast at Bellfoundry Petit & Fritsen, cast from metals of the bells from the old church that had partially melted in the fire. Radiant chapels were installed in the transition from the transept to the presbytery. The presbytery is provided with a chancel corridor. In the large wall surfaces in the church there are various decorations, such as round arches and lisons. The dome painting is by Jan Oosterman. In the 1960s stained glass windows by Theo Mols were installed.
There are two old organs in the church. The main organ was built in 1906 by Theodorus Nöhren and restored by Verschueren in 1970. Later, a 1941 Verschueren organ from the Tivoli church in Eindhoven was also installed as the choir organ.
In front of the church stands, since 2014, the Sacred Heart statue. The statue was made by sculptor Wim Harzing and was offered by parishioners to Pastor Swinkels in 1930. In 2014 the statue was restored and placed in front of the church. The church was designated a national monument in 1976.
