Facts About Preuss's red colobus
Preuss's red colobus is a critically endangered primate primarily inhabiting the Cross-Sanaga Rivers ecoregion. A substantial number of these monkeys can be found in Korup National Park in Cameroon. Additionally, they occupy surrounding areas in Nigeria and other parts of the Korup region. Another population resides in the Ebo forest of Cameroon.
The principal threats to Preuss's red colobus include hunting and habitat destruction. Most of the remaining populations are located in protected areas such as Korup National Park, Cross River National Park, and the proposed national park at Ebo, which afford them some degree of protection.
These monkeys are easily identifiable by their distinctive appearance: they feature a black head, a black back with orange markings, and bright red tails, limbs, and cheeks. Over the years, scientists have debated their classification, sometimes considering them subspecies of P. pennantii and P. badius.
Conserving these unique and striking primates is imperative, as their numbers continue to decline due to human activities.
