Facts About Puff Puff
Puff-puff is a cherished African snack consisting of fried dough, widely enjoyed across many West African regions. In certain areas, it is also referred to as mandazi. The essential ingredients for puff-puff include flour, yeast, sugar, butter, salt, and water, with optional eggs added for extra richness. The dough is deep-fried in vegetable oil until it achieves a delightful golden-brown hue.
While yeast is the traditional leavening agent, baking powder can be used as a substitute if needed. After frying, puff-puffs can be coated in sugar or dusted with spices like cinnamon, vanilla, or nutmeg to enhance their flavor. They are delicious on their own and can also be paired with various accompaniments. In Cameroon, for instance, puff-puffs are often enjoyed with beans, coffee, or other beverages as a breakfast option.
Comparable to French beignets and Italian zeppole, puff-puffs can be customized with different flavors and served alongside fruit dips such as strawberry or raspberry. This snack is not only tasty but also holds cultural significance, even being featured in the novel "Behold the Dreamers" by Imbolo Mbue.
