Facts About Moldejazz
The Molde International Jazz Festival, commonly known as Moldejazz, is one of Europe’s oldest jazz festivals, held every July. It originated with the local Storyville Jazz Club and has enjoyed government support since 1964. Over the years, the festival has built a rich history, showcasing notable artists such as bassist Bjørn Kjellemyr, who set a record with 17 consecutive performances by 2015. Other frequent performers include Asmund Bjørken, Jan Garbarek, Karin Krog, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and John Scofield.
A daily highlight of the festival is the parade led by New Orleans musician Lionel Batiste. Many of the concerts are broadcast to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and the festival has inspired memorable compositions such as "Break of Day in Molde" by Johs. Bergh and Karin Krog.
While jazz is the primary focus, Moldejazz also embraces a variety of genres, featuring blues, rock, and pop musicians alongside jazz performances. It is a significant event in the jazz world, attracting both local and international talent as well as diverse audiences.
