Facts About Cebu flowerpecker
The Cebu flowerpecker is a diminutive bird endemic to Cebu Island in the Philippines. Unfortunately, it is critically endangered due to significant habitat loss, with an estimated population of only 85 to 105 individuals remaining in the wild.
For decades, the Cebu flowerpecker was believed to have gone extinct in the early 20th century. However, it was rediscovered in 1992 within a small limestone forest. The male Cebu flowerpecker is particularly striking, showcasing bright scarlet to vermilion plumage complemented by a glossy blue-black body. In contrast, the female exhibits more subdued hues, with brown and olive feathers.
Conservation efforts are currently underway to preserve this exquisite bird. Encouragingly, there have been potential sightings in other areas such as Malabuyoc, offering a glimmer of hope. The rediscovery of the Cebu flowerpecker underscores the critical importance of protecting the habitats of endangered species.
