Facts About Philippine tube-nosed fruit bat
The Philippine tube-nosed fruit bat, locally known as Bayakan in Tagalog, is a distinctive bat species belonging to the family Pteropodidae. This bat is endemic to the Philippines and inhabits the islands of Cebu, Negros, and Sibuyan. It thrives in both primary and secondary subtropical or tropical dry forests, particularly those near water sources.
Regrettably, deforestation poses a significant threat to the survival of this species by causing extensive habitat destruction. Named in honor of Dioscoro S. Rabor, one of the species' collectors, it is also referred to as the Visayan tube-nosed fruit bat or Rabor's tube-nosed fruit bat.
Regarding its conservation status, the Philippine tube-nosed fruit bat (Nyctimene rabori) is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This classification indicates that the species is at a high risk of extinction unless effective conservation measures are implemented to safeguard its natural habitat and population.
