Facts About Scarlet-collared flowerpecker
The scarlet-collared flowerpecker is a captivating little bird, approximately 10 cm in length, that resides exclusively in the Philippines. More precisely, this vibrant species inhabits the island of Mindoro. They are typically found in the forest canopy, along forest edges, and in open areas with scattered trees, generally at elevations below 1000 meters.
One of the most distinctive aspects of this bird is its call, which resembles the sound of two stones being struck together, accompanied by a high-pitched "zeet zeet zeet." The scarlet-collared flowerpecker is closely related to the red-keeled flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe), but can be distinguished by its longer, more slender curved beak.
Visually, this bird is a stunner. Its upper parts are black with a glossy slate-blue tint, and it features a striking scarlet collar on its upper back. The throat and upper breast are also black, adorned with a small red patch on the throat, while the belly is white, accented by a scarlet stripe bordered by black.
Regrettably, this beautiful bird faces threats from habitat loss. Conservation efforts are essential to ensure that this species continues to illuminate the forests of Mindoro with its vibrant presence.
