The first museum in Mielec was established in 1964 as an initiative of the Mielec Region Lovers Society. The collections were exhibited in the building of the former District Council. Due to a great interest in the exposition, the head of the town decided to establish a Regional Museum at the beginning of 1978. The newly created institution successively took over the collections of the TMZM museum; this transfer ended in 1993.
The first seat of the Regional Museum was the premises of the former Registry Office at 13 Mickiewicza St. In 1983 the Oborskis' Palace at Legionów St. was acquired for museum purposes. Whereas in 1987, thanks to the efforts of TMZM, the Jaderny House in Jaderny Street was saved from demolition - this building was the main seat of the museum in the years 1993-2002.
The exhibits include a copy of the town charter from the 16th century and a copy of the Bible by Jakub Wujek from 1599. There are also archaeological collections, furnishings of local manors and peasants' houses, and a collection of irons. There are also paintings by Wojciech Kossak, Teodor Axentowicz and Vlastimil Hofman. The museum also has a large collection of memorabilia and works of Wladyslaw Zurawski, an outstanding wood engraver.
The Oborski Palace in the permanent exhibition presents memorabilia related to the former owners of the building and park - the Oborski family, the oldest memorabilia related to Mielec and the region, including bones and a mammoth tusk found in Mielec and a gallery of paintings showing the former inhabitants of the city and the most valuable paintings of the museum. In the Oborskis' Palace, there are also temporary exhibitions on various topics: archaeology, hunting, nature - amber and various issues from the history of the city.
The main building also houses the museum library and a store where Museum publications can be purchased.
The Jaderny House, on the other hand, hosts an exhibition related to old photography, featuring not only photographs but also antique photographic equipment: cameras, film cameras, tripods, lenses, flashguns, projectors, and darkroom and laboratory equipment.
