Cmentarz Żołnierzy Radzieckich na Skowroniej Górze, Wrocław
Facts and practical information
Cemetery of Soviet Soldiers on Skowronia Góra - a Wroclaw war necropolis of Red Army soldiers who died or died of wounds and diseases during the siege of Wroclaw in 1945. About 7.5 thousand soldiers, mainly from the 6th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front under the command of General Vladimir Gluzdovsky, were buried here.
In 1945, in this place located near the Catholic and Evangelical cemeteries, there was a temporary burial field for the fallen Red Army, one of eight such burial fields in Wroclaw and its immediate vicinity. In 1947-48, as part of a campaign to clean up the graves of the fallen soldiers, the cemetery on Skowronia Góra was chosen as the final resting place for all those who died during the siege of Wroclaw. The remains of those buried in the other seven places were exhumed and moved to this cemetery, which had been previously enlarged to 4 hectares.
In the years 1965-67 the necropolis was reconstructed, giving it the shape that has survived to the present day. The cemetery is divided into four fields with thirty plots, each of them consisting of twelve mass graves. On some of the graves there are plaques commemorating the buried soldiers, placed by their families and relatives. In 1967, a monument designed by Lucja Skomorowska was unveiled. It was made of granite of different colors and the individual elements of the monument relate to the quarters of the necropolis - on each of them are carved the names of the fallen and the number of unknown buried in the corresponding section of the cemetery.
