Facts and practical information
St. Lawrence Church in Rybnik is a Roman Catholic parish church in Rybnik, in the district of Ligota - Ligocka Kuźnia, in the province of Silesia. It belongs to Rybnik deanery of Katowice Archdiocese. It is located in Wolna street. The present parish priest is Jaroslaw Paszkot.
The church is located on the Trail of Wooden Architecture of Silesian Province in Rybnik loop.
The temple was built in Boguszowice in 1717 by Jakub Siedlaczek from Gliwice. It is a timber framed temple with a Greek cross plan, planked and erected on a high contemporary foundation. The front tower of pole construction, planked with boards was added in 1830. The gable roof is covered with shingles, and the equipment of the temple is original. The building is oriented. It has stood in its present location since 1975.
Noteworthy is the Baroque interior of the temple. Particularly valuable is the painting by Michael Willman from 1685 depicting the martyrdom of St. Lawrence. Together with part of the equipment in 1810 it was moved from the Cistercian church in Rudy. In the side altars there is a Baroque painting of the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and the dying monk, and a late Renaissance painting of the Virgin Mary with Child in a gilded robe.
The church is famous for its Bethlehem nativity scene with 13 moving figures, activated at Christmas time. In the summer of 1997, a stylish wooden church gate was built with the patron saint of the parish in the finial. Surrounding the church is an established garden with a rich collection of ornamental shrubs and perennials. In the years 1991-1994 St. Wawrzyniec parish took first place in the mayor's competition "For nicer Rybnik" - in the category "most beautifully arranged surroundings of public buildings".
