Kościół Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Polski, Zawiercie
Facts and practical information
Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland in Zawiercie - a church, located on Paderewskiego Street in Zawiercie.
Although the parish was erected by bishop Zdzislaw Golinski on May 7, 1957, for many years the function of its church was fulfilled by a cemetery chapel with an area of 20 m², because the permission to build a church issued in 1957 was withdrawn.
It was not until February 16, 1974, that the Zawiercie City Council granted permission to begin construction of a new church, and it was then that the foundations for the building began to be dug. The then parish priest, Rev. Stanisław Woźny, finished the building in its raw state - the temple walls were covered only with a roof, it had no windows, doors or ceiling.
In 1982, Father Zygmunt Sroka became the new pastor of the parish. He began the expansion and renovation of the church. Because of cracks in the church, he ordered new footings to be placed under the existing ones in the front of the church and in the western wall section, the walls to be strung with steel rods using Roman screws, and the cracks to be filled with resin glue. In the course of time, the walls were secured, a double ceiling was constructed with thermal insulation, windows and doors were installed, the church was plastered and painted inside and out, lighting and radio were installed, a marble floor was installed, storm drainage and exterior lighting were installed, electric bell drive was installed, the church yard was completely fenced, and the church was equipped with organs, pews and confessionals.
In the next stage the decor of the presbytery was made: bronze altar with the scene of the Last Supper, the pulpit with the bas-reliefs of the Evangelists and the Decalogue, the baptismal font with the scenes of Christ's baptism, the baptism of Poland and crossing the Red Sea, and candlesticks.
On May 14, 2000 Archbishop Stanislaw Nowak consecrated the church.
In 2002-2004, Prof. Wincenty Kućma created stained glass windows: "Covenant", "Christ the Redeemer", "Pilgrims", "Fish", "Eucharistic Symbols", "Baptism of Christ".
In 2011, a 51.5 m high bell tower was erected at the church.
