Cerkiew św. Jerzego Męczennika
Facts and practical information
St. George the Martyr Church in New Orchards - a brick parish Greek Catholic church, located in New Orchards.
The stone church of St. George the Martyr was probably built in 1655, rebuilt in 1836, and restored in 1932. The stone walls were reinforced with three buttresses to the north and one to the south. The church is of one-space type, the nave and the chancel are of equal width and are located under a common tripartite roof with a little bell in a form of a helmet with a lantern. The interior is covered with sail vaults separated by gables. The side walls have semicircular windows and bricked up loopholes on the inside. In the eastern part of the building there is a narrower and lower sacristy and in the western part there is a tower covered with a gable roof. Thick walls, small windows, loopholes and strategic location give the church a defensive character.
The church belonged to the Thanankovichi decanate. The parish also included branch churches in Nowosiolki Dydyńskie, Pacławie, Kalwaria Pacławska and Truszewycze.
The equipment of the church was destroyed in the years 1947-1989, when the church was not used. Currently it is back to its former function. On August 15, an indulgenced feast is held here with the participation of the Greek Catholic bishop of Przemyśl and worshippers from Poland and Ukraine.
