Kościół św. Maksymiliana, Włocławek
Facts and practical information
St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe Parish Church in Włocławek otherwise known as the Floating Barge is a parish church serving a parish of the same name, built in the 1880s.
The parish church was intended by its architects to resemble a "floating barge". At the entrance to the church, in the central point, a monumental tower rises from the body of the temple, built on a semicircle plan, which slopes backwards, which is why most young Wloclawians call the church a "ski jump" or a "slide". Three bells are placed on the tower.
Inside the church, in the center of the chancel, in a cement "trough" built in a semicircle and covered with "golden" mosaics, there is a cross with the image of the dying Jesus and bearing the sign "INRI". At the top, it turns into a red disk with rays of light radiating out in all directions, in which there is a white dove, the Holy Spirit. Behind the disk is the figure of God the Father in an orange robe spreading his hands as a sign of blessing. On God the Father's head is a golden triangle - the symbol of divine providence. On either side of the chancel is a multi-level mosaic. At the very bottom of the mosaic is Paradise with Adam and Eve on the left. On the right side of the chancel in a circular relief is the tabernacle surrounded by "gold" mosaics. Above the tabernacle is an image of a lamb. The second level of the mosaic in the chancel is a river. In the third "plan", on either side of the cross and the gutter, there are silhouettes of saints; to the left of the cross are, from left to right, St. Jacek, St. Casimir the King, St. Jadwiga the Queen, St. Faustina, St. Stanislaus the Bishop and St. Maximilian. To the right of the cross you can see St. Adalbert, St. Andrew Bobola, St. Hedwig of Silesia, St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Ursula Ledóchowska and St. Albert Chmielowski. On the fourth level one can see the walls with many towers, these are the walls of the Kingdom of God, below them, i.e. still in the mortal world, there are buildings - houses of the New Jerusalem.
The chancel is also made on a semicircular plan. At both front corners connecting the chancel and side walls are statues of St. Peter. Just below them, still at the ends of the chancel are simple electronic displays, due to the placement of the pillars in the church, such displays are two so that the texts of songs, psalms can be seen from any part of the church. In the past, instead of these displays, on the left side of the church there was a white screen on which the text was projected by a projector placed on one of the pillars. To the right of the chancel is a glazed entrance to the chapel, which contains an old pulpit and an old altar. Above the entrance to the chapel there is a replica of the Madonna of Jasna Gora in a brick arch with a "golden" mosaic background. To the right of it is an illuminated stained glass window depicting the image of the Holy Martyr. To the left of the presbytery, at the level of the entrance to the chapel, is a replica of the painting "Jesus, I Trust in You". Below the painting are embedded relics of St. Maximilian. To the left of it is an illuminated stained glass window depicting St. Maximilian.
On the walls of the church there are fourteen Stations of the Cross made in wood. Inside the church, above the entrance, there is a spacious balcony that houses the organ.
The altar top is made of precious stone and its one extensive leg depicts the Last Supper. The pulpit leg, which is made in the same style, depicts the four evangelists.
In May 2011, a portrait of John Paul II was placed to the right of the painting "Jesus, I Trust in You. The painting, painted by an altar server, Daniel Pawlowski, was placed as a token of gratitude for the beatification of the Polish Pope.
