Cerkiew św. Antoniego Pieczerskiego w Holi
Facts and practical information
St. Anthony Pechersky and St. Martyr Paraskeva Orthodox Church - an Orthodox branch church in Holi. It belongs to the Parish of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Horostyta, in Chelm Decanate of the Lublin-Chelm Diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. It is located in the vicinity of the Open Air Museum of Material Culture of Chelm and Podlasie in Holi. Near the church there is an Orthodox cemetery with a chapel of Care of Mother of God.
An Orthodox parish in Holi was first mentioned in 1588 and in the first years after the signing of the Union of Brest, it adopted its provisions. A new Orthodox church built in 1610 was therefore already a Uniate temple. The building survived until 1700, when it was destroyed in a fire. Two years later another church was erected in its place, which existed until 1846, when it was again replaced by a new church. The last major reconstruction of the building took place after 1875, when the parish of Hola, as a result of the liquidation of the Uniate Diocese of Chelm, passed to the Russian Orthodox Church. Hola was one of those towns, where despite repressions illegal Uniate communities survived.
In 1915, the Orthodox population of Holi went on a retreat. Upon their return, the church was not reopened as an Orthodox church, but functioned as a Neo-Orthodox church from 1924 to 1939. The church returned to the Orthodox faith during World War II, but was closed again in 1947, and for the next six years was opened only during the Easter holidays. It was restored for liturgical use in 1953.
