Cerkiew pw. Świętych Piotra i Pawła
Facts and practical information
Church of Saints Peter and Paul - an Orthodox branch church in Sosnowica. It belongs to the Parish of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Horostyta, in Chelm Decanate of Lublin-Chelm Diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
The first Orthodox church in Sosnowica was built in 1522-1544, but it was destroyed in the same century. In 1598 Unitarian church was built in Sosnowica. It was a seat of parish until 1890 when it was moved to the local cemetery because of its bad technical condition. The new church was designed by Victor Sychugov in Byzantine-Russian style and built in 1891-1894. It was already an Orthodox church, because the parish of Sosnovitsa changed its religion in 1875, as a result of administrative liquidation of the Uniate Diocese of Chelm. The church was the seat of the parish in 1894-1946, with a break in functioning in 1915-1919, when the local Orthodox population went into exile. After deportations of Orthodox Ukrainians within the deportations to the USSR and Operation "Vistula", the church was abandoned and adapted to a warehouse. Most of its historic equipment was then destroyed. After 1989 the object was restored to liturgical use as a branch church. Holy Liturgy is celebrated there once a year, on the patronal feast.
The church is located in the central part of the village, by the main road from Lublin, west of the market square. About 150 meters from the church there is a historic, active Orthodox cemetery.
