Park Tysiąclecia, Poznań
Facts and practical information
Millennium Park - a park in Poznań. Extends at the northern end of Komandoria, between Warszawska Street and Lake Malta.
It was arranged in a forest area, on the place of a former military shooting range and a former cemetery on Swietojanska street. A characteristic tree, abundant in the park, is the robinia acacia. This non-native tree, which readily adopts and reproduces, was planted in the 19th century to mask the military firing range and fortifications on Malta. An inscription is engraved on the obelisk at the entrance to the park: The park covers an area of 26.3 hectares. The first plans to create a "people's park" were made in the years 1928-1929, but they did not come to fruition because of the opposition of a group of naturalists gathered around Adam Wodziczko. In 1931 a competition was announced for the development of the "Cybiński Klin Zieleni", which began to be implemented only after the reconstruction of Poznan from war damage. The park was finally opened to the public on 16 July 1966 as the first of the five planned new parks in Poznań, but the finishing works lasted until 1970, when a small amphitheatre with a concert shell was built.
The park contains 28 monumental erratic boulders. Most of them come from the city gravel pit in G³ówna Street and from the area of the school for the deaf and dumb in ¦ródka.
A Socialist Youth Union Center and a Polish Scouting Association Center were also built in the park. There was also an abnormally large chessboard with figures for playing chess. There were also plans to erect a monument to the Poznan Army in the park.
Today the park attracts many residents of Poznan for walks along its wide avenues. The immediate vicinity of Lake Malta makes the place even more attractive. The amphitheater is used during the Malta Festival Poznań.
