It was established by order of the Minister of Forestry and Wood Industry of 21 July 1958 on the recognition as a nature reserve. The reserve is located at an altitude of about 217-255 m above sea level.
The name "Czartowe Pole" comes from a legend connected with a clearing included in the reserve, about which it was said that only devils wandered there.
The top parts of the steep slopes of the Sopot valley are overgrown with pine forest, which changes into mixed wet forest. The bottom of the valley is covered mainly by floodplain forests, and wet meadows in places. The reserve does not have a current protection plan, however, there are protection tasks in force, by virtue of which the reserve's area is subject to active protection. Measures taken within the framework of the protection tasks are currently focused on limiting the gradation of the sharp-toothed bark beetle and the bark beetle.
