Facts and practical information
Maria Konopnicka Museum in Żarnowiec - biographical museum dedicated to Maria Konopnicka, established in 1957 in Żarnowiec, Podkarpacie.
The museum consists of: a historic manor house from the eighteenth century, rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century, a park of over 3 hectares and a lamus. They constitute a national gift given to the writer Maria Konopnicka in 1903 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of her writing career.
On September 8, 1903, Konopnicka moved into a manor house in Żarnowiec together with Maria Dulębianka, with whom she remained close friends. She spent the spring and summer months there, and was very active as a social activist and writer. From there, they traveled together to Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, whose climate was good for Konopnicka's health. Dulębianka had her own painting studio in the manor house.
From 1910 to 1956 the manor house in Żarnowiec remained in the possession of her family. The poet's daughters, Zofia Mickiewiczowa and Laura Pytlińska, an actress, stayed here.
During the occupation Zofia gave shelter and material help to partisans. The manor house in Żarnowiec was for some time the headquarters of the Krosno Home Army Inspectorate. Her husband Adam Stanisław Mickiewicz was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and died in Auschwitz-Birkenau. After the war Z. Mickiewiczowa was friends with the actress Wanda Siemaszkowa, who came to Żarnowiec in October 1945 and died at the manor house on 6 August 1947.
In 1956, Zofia Mickiewiczowa and other heirs of the poet donated the manor house and park to the Polish nation for a biographical museum. In 1957, the Ministry of Culture and Art established the Maria Konopnicka Museum in Żarnowiec. The museum exhibitions were opened on September 15, 1960, after renovation and conservation works. In 1991, the lamus building, which houses part of the exhibits, was put into use.
The plaque commemorating Maria Konopnicka in the museum was made in 1980 by Wladyslaw Kandefer.
