Pańszczycka Turnia, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Pańszczycka Turnia - a summit in the region of the northern ridge of Skrajny Granat in the Polish High Tatras. It rises to an altitude of 2106 m in a side ridge diverging to the north-east through the Switch under the pipes. In north-east direction from the top of Pańszczycka Turnia falls down to Pańszczyca a large perch with the elevation of about 250 m. Its north-western slope is relatively gentle, the south-eastern one steep. Both slopes descend to the gullies. The rift on the south-eastern side ends in the scree of Zadni Usypów. Westwards Pańszczycka Turnia descends with a wall. Viewed from this side it is only a rocky part of the ridge, from the east it is a steep spire.
The top of Pańszczycka Turnia is a large block of rock. From the northern side there are vertical, cracked, black blocks of solid rock. The rocks on the southern side are yellowish. The Pańszczycka Turnia falls down here with a vertical cliff as a result of an overthrow. In the Tatra monthly magazine Jan Krupski says that it was formed by dropping bombs, which were dropped here by a troubled American bomber during the World War II. According to Wladyslaw Cywinski this is rather a myth - the collapse could have happened spontaneously. Below the huge scree of Zadnich Usypów on the bottom of Pańszczyca lie huge rock blocks that broke away from Pańszczycka Turnia.
There are no marked tourist trails leading to the top. It is visited by mountaineers while going through the ridge to Wierch pod Fajki. There are also other climbing routes on it. Currently it is outside the area available for mountaineering. Rock climbing is allowed on the nearby ridge of Wierch pod Fajki and its walls, but only from the side of the Gąsienicowa Valley.
The first known ascent to the top of Pańszczycka Turnia: Witold Henryk Paryski on September 10, 1931. Other climbing routes: Northeast perch; II, 1 1/2 hrs. Northeast wall; on steep grass I, 1 hr. South wall; VII+, 40 min.
