Baszta Jeńców
Facts and practical information
Baszta Jeńców - a tower in Stargard. Baszta Jeńców, St. Mary's Collegiate Church and other defensive walls were recognized as a monument of history by order of the President of Poland on 17 September 2010.
It was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries in the southern part of the fortifications running along the bank of the Ina River. The building, located at present Strażnicza Street, has the shape of a cylinder 13 m high, which rests on a round stone base, and its construction is divided inside into four levels, each of which has shooting holes. The ground floor of the tower once had arcades supporting porches. This made it possible to fire through the openings in the wall, simultaneously from several levels.
Similar to the POW Tower, the Blacksmith Tower was demolished in 1871, hence the current name of the tower.
The name of the tower suggests that its rooms were used to hold prisoners of war.
In 2004 the tower was handed over to the Brotherhood of St. John's Knights through the Stargard Friends Society. Since then, in cooperation with the Stargard Museum, the Brotherhood has been taking care of and restoring this monument.
