Ruinas Romanas, Praia da Luz
Facts and practical information
Luz is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lagos, with an area of 21.78 km² and 4357 inhabitants. Its population density is 200 h/km².
The seat of the parish, the village of Luz, was elevated to town on July 12, 2001.
In this village, you will find Praia da Luz, near the fortress of Nossa Senhora da Luz. By the sea, there is a promenade, where visitors can walk and sit on benches facing the water, which gives them a picturesque view.
Along the path of the promenade, there are ruins of Roman baths, which can be visited daily. The ruins are located against a long wall, on the sea side, and several houses, on the land side. Next to them is a plan that explains the original organization of the baths, making it possible to distinguish its various sections, such as, for example, the frigidarium.
Due to the existence of the beach, the town is visited by numerous tourists, Portuguese and foreigners, the latter being mainly of British origin. The high number of tourists and residents of this nationality has led to the opening of several bars and other distinctly English tourist establishments.
