Red Lake
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the scenic landscape of the Eastern Carpathians in Romania, Red Lake (Lacul Roșu) offers a unique natural spectacle that fascinates both locals and tourists alike. This natural dam lake, located near the town of Gheorgheni, was formed in 1837 when a landslide blocked the Bicaz Valley, submerging a forest and giving the lake its distinctive appearance with tree trunks protruding from the water's surface.
Red Lake is the largest natural mountain lake in Romania, with its name derived from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by its main tributary, the Red Creek. The lake spans an area of approximately 12.01 hectares and reaches depths of over 10 meters. It is situated at an altitude of 983 meters, adding to its breathtaking allure.
The lake is not only a visual wonder but also a hub for outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy leisurely boat rides, which offer a serene way to explore the lake and its surroundings, or engage in fishing, as the lake is stocked with various species of trout. Hiking enthusiasts will find the surrounding trails rewarding, with paths leading through the dense coniferous forests and offering stunning vistas of the lake and the Carpathian Mountains.
In the wintertime, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, providing opportunities for winter sports and picturesque landscapes. The lake itself often freezes over, presenting a different kind of beauty to admire.
Red Lake is also steeped in local legends, with tales speaking of the lake's creation and the origin of its color, adding an element of mystique to the visitor experience.
