Facts About West Caucasian tur
The West Caucasian tur is a captivating goat-antelope species native to the western Caucasus Mountains. Standing about 1 meter tall at the shoulder and weighing approximately 65 kg, these animals are easily identifiable by their chestnut-colored coat, yellow underbelly, dark legs, and striking scimitar-shaped horns, which are heavily ridged. Male turs tend to have larger horns than females.
These animals thrive in the rugged mountainous terrain, living at elevations ranging from 800 to 4,000 meters above sea level. Their diet consists primarily of grasses and leaves, and they must remain vigilant against predators such as wolves and lynxes.
Interestingly, West Caucasian turs are nocturnal, foraging for food at night and seeking shelter during the day. Female turs typically form small herds of about 10 individuals, whereas males are more solitary.
Currently, the wild population of West Caucasian turs is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000 individuals.
