Manezhnaya Square, Moscow

Manezhnaya Square is a vibrant public space steeped in history, located in the heart of Moscow, Russia. This bustling square is encircled by significant landmarks, including the Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, and the Alexander Garden. Known for its distinctive cobblestone paths and impressive architecture, Manezhnaya Square serves as a cultural and social hub for Muscovites and tourists alike.

The square's origins date back to the 18th century when it was used as a parade ground adjacent to the Manege, a large riding academy built to prepare Russian cavalry. The Manege's grand structure, which gives the square its name, remains an architectural marvel and now hosts exhibitions and events.

In the 1990s, Manezhnaya Square underwent a major renovation, transforming it into a modern, pedestrian-friendly area. The renovation included the creation of an underground shopping mall and the installation of a glass dome, which allows natural light to illuminate the subterranean space.

The square is also known for its elaborate underground fountain complex, the Four Seasons of the Year, which features statues representing the four seasons and is a popular photo spot for visitors. Above ground, the square is adorned with beautifully landscaped gardens and an equestrian statue of Marshal Georgy Zhukov, a World War II hero.
