Facts About Tufahije
Tufahije is a cherished dessert from Bosnia and Herzegovina, made by poaching walnut-stuffed apples in sugar water. This delightful treat is also popular in Serbia, North Macedonia, and Croatia. A similar dessert can be found in Bulgaria, known as "pechani yabalki" which also features walnuts, but the apples are baked instead of poached.
The name "tufahija" is derived from the Ottoman Turkish word "tuffāḥa" (تفاحة), meaning 'apple,' which originally comes from Arabic.
When serving tufahije, they are placed in large glasses, drenched in a luscious syrup, and garnished with a dollop of whipped cream. It is customary to enjoy this dessert with a cup of coffee on the side.
