Facts About Zagorski Štrukli
Zagorski štrukli is a beloved traditional dish from Croatia, particularly cherished in the Hrvatsko Zagorje and Zagreb regions in the north. This comforting treat consists of dough filled with various ingredients and can be either cooked or baked. It bears a resemblance to štruklji, a traditional dish from neighboring Slovenia.
Preparing štrukli involves a straightforward yet rewarding process, regardless of whether you choose the boiled or baked version. Begin by rolling out the pastry dough until it is thin and smooth. Next, fill the dough with a delightful mixture of cottage cheese, eggs, sour cream, and a pinch of salt. Then, roll the filled dough lengthwise, cut it into pieces, and cook according to your preference.
For baked štrukli, place the pieces in a baking tray, add clotted cream on top, and bake until they achieve a golden brown color. For boiled štrukli, cook the pieces in boiling water and then enhance the flavor with some fried onion and parsley.
In recognition of its cultural significance, Zagorski štrukli was honored in 2007 as part of Croatia's intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture.
