Aneto, Benasque
Facts and practical information
Aneto, the Colossus of the Pyrenees, stands as the highest peak in the mountain range and the third highest in Spain, reaching an imposing 3,404 meters above sea level. Located in the town of Benasque, nestled within the province of Huesca, Aneto is a beacon for mountaineers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts from around the globe.
This majestic mountain is part of the Maladeta Massif and is a pinnacle in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, renowned for its spectacular landscapes, glacial features, and rich biodiversity. Aneto's summit is crowned with the largest glacier in the Pyrenees, although it has significantly receded in recent years due to climate change.
The ascent to Aneto is a challenging adventure, with the most popular route being the ascent from the Renclusa Refuge. This path requires a good level of physical fitness and, depending on the season, it may necessitate the use of crampons and ice axes. The final section, known as the "Mohawk" due to its narrow crest, leads to the summit and offers breathtaking views that span the Pyrenees.
For those not keen on the rigorous climb, the surrounding area of Benasque Valley offers a plethora of activities. Visitors can enjoy serene walks, picturesque villages, Romanesque architecture, and the warm hospitality of the local Aragonese culture.
