Refugi Ernest Mallafré, Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park
Facts and practical information
Ernest Mallafré hut is a mountain hut in the Pyrenees, located in the province of Lérida, in the Alto Aran region, at 1885 m altitude, very close to the lake of Saint Maurice.
The refuge is located on the Carros de Foc route, a 55 km hike that covers all the refuges inside the Aiguas Tortas and Sant Maurici Lake National Park, very close to the mouth of the Monestero river, in the Escritá river, at the foot of the emblematic mountains of Los Encantados.
The GR-11, which runs through the Pyrenees from east to west through the high mountains, also passes through the area.
The name was given in honour of the climber Ernest Mallafré. He died on December 31, 1946, when he was only 24 years old, due to an avalanche coming down from the peak of Monestero. His ascents in Montserrat and the mallos de Riglos, where one of the points of Firé, the point of Mallafré, was given his name after his death, are very remarkable.
