Monasterio de Santa María de Palazuelos
Facts and practical information
The monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos or Nuestra Señora de Palazuelos was a Cistercian monastery from the first third of the 13th century, built in the valley of the river Pisuerga, very close to its right bank, in what was the village of Palazuelos -nowadays uninhabited-, between the present terms of Corcos del Valle and Cabezón de Pisuerga. Its foundation was due to Alfonso Téllez de Meneses; it has a long history that goes from its first settlement until the Spanish Disentailment in the 19th century. As such a Cistercian construction, the work is somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic. It was a grandiose monument - becoming the "Head of the Cistercian Order in Castile" - of which only the consolidated ruins of the church building remain.
In 1998-1999, after the last collapse of roofs and a pillar of the south nave -which dragged with it the primitive belfry-, the Junta de Castilla y León took charge of the urgent repair works within the Emergency Plan. They were important and important works to avoid the total collapse of which the company Cabero Edificaciones, specialized in restorations of historical monuments, took charge.
In 2012, thanks to the initiative of the City Council of Cabezón de Pisuerga and the newly created Friends of Palazuelos Association with the support of the Provincial Council of Valladolid, a plan was launched to clear the rubble, electrical installation, cleaning, collection and numbering of ashlars scattered on the ground and everything necessary to make the monument available to visitors and bring it to life, preventing it from falling into a new lethargy.
The rest of the buildings that made up the monastery, as well as the furniture and works of art of the church have become part of the "Missing Heritage of the province of Valladolid".
Currently, it is considered as BIC .
