Leones de la plaza de Castilla, Oviedo
Facts and practical information
The urban sculpture known as the Lions of the Plaza de Castilla, located behind Pérez de la Sala Street, in the city of Oviedo, Principality of Asturias, Spain, is one of more than a hundred that adorn the streets of the aforementioned Spanish city.
The urban landscape of this city is adorned by sculptural works, generally commemorative monuments dedicated to important people at first, and more purely artistic since the late twentieth century.
The sculpture, made in bronze, is the work of Florencio Muñiz Uribe, and its current location dates back to 1971. It was previously located at the entrance to the Castilla motorway, but in 1970 the Ministry of the Army ceded it to the City Council of Oviedo, who relocated it to the Plaza de Castilla in 1971.
The sculptural group is formed by two bronze lions, from which the balls on which they rested their feet and the inscription have been removed, in the middle of which a coat of arms of Oviedo is sculpted in stone.
In 2013, Foro Asturias requested Oviedo City Council to place a plaque in recognition of the "altruistic work" of the "Lions Club" in the Plaza de Castilla, making use of this sculptural group, whose symbolism, had a certain relationship with the name of the Club. The municipal group's request was based on the consideration that the Lions Club "is a worldwide organization of an altruistic nature at the service of all types of charities and charitable organizations". In the city of Oviedo this club has been several years, a few years after the beginning of the XXI century, doing philanthropic work and helping others, among others, the Economic Kitchen.
