Facts About Mekhong
Mekhong holds the distinction of being Thailand's first homegrown golden spirit, often celebrated as "The Spirit of Thailand." Its origins hark back to 1914 when the privately-owned Sura Bangyikhan Distillery was nationalized by the Thai government. Consequently, the Excise Department took over the production and distribution of spirits, culminating in the creation of a blend named "Chiang-Chun." This eventually led to the development of a unique spirit infused with local herbs and spices, which significantly reduced Thailand's reliance on imported whiskey.
The name "Mekhong" was coined during the administration of Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsongkram, inspired by a patriotic song written by Luang Wichitwathakan during the Indochina War. Mekhong is primarily crafted from sugarcane/molasses and rice, enriched with native herbs and spices. The spirit is distilled, blended, and bottled at the Bangyikhan Distillery in Bangkok, boasting an alcohol content of 35% by volume. It has become a popular choice for cocktails such as the "Thai Sabai."
Mekhong has also cemented its place in popular culture. It is referenced in songs by The Pogues and The Refreshments, underscoring its influence in the music world. The Refreshments even penned a song titled "Mekhong" which narrates a story set in a Bangkok bar, encapsulating the vibrant atmosphere of the city.
