Large red damselfly

The Large Red Damselfly, scientifically known as *Pyrrhosoma nymphula*, is a captivating species belonging to the Coenagrionidae family. Predominantly found across Europe, this species also inhabits parts of Northern Africa and Western Asia. These damselflies favor serene habitats such as small ponds, lakes, ditches, and slow-moving rivers, avoiding fast-flowing waters.

These delicate creatures typically measure around 33-36 millimeters in length. Males are particularly striking with their red eyes, a black thorax adorned with red shoulder stripes, and a red abdomen featuring black rings and bands. Females come in three distinct color variations, each showcasing different patterns of black and red on their abdomens. A notable identifying characteristic of this species is their black legs, which differentiate them from other damselflies.

The Large Red Damselfly is among the most widespread damselfly species. They usually start to emerge in April or May and can be observed until September. Once they reach adulthood, it takes them approximately two weeks to mature fully. Mating typically occurs amidst vegetation, and females lay their eggs in water. The larvae take around two years to develop, feeding on various aquatic organisms during this period.
