Banqueting House, London
Facts and practical information
The Banqueting House in London stands as a grand testament to the architectural splendor of the early 17th century. Situated on Whitehall, a stone's throw away from the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street, this elegant monument is the last remaining component of the Palace of Whitehall, which was largely destroyed by fire in 1698.
Constructed between 1619 and 1622 for King James I, the Banqueting House is renowned for its magnificent ceiling, painted by Sir Peter Paul Rubens. The paintings, which were commissioned by Charles I, celebrate the majesty of his father's reign and were one of the king's last commissions before his execution outside the very same building in 1649.
The structure was designed by Inigo Jones, the first significant English architect who introduced the classical Palladian style to England. With its harmonious proportions and the use of white Portland stone, the Banqueting House is a striking example of the classical Renaissance architecture that was in vogue at the time.
Today, the Banqueting House is open to the public and serves as a museum. Visitors can marvel at the Rubens ceiling from the comfort of bean bags placed on the floor, offering an unorthodox yet comfortable viewing position. The main hall, with its soaring columns and grand windows, is frequently used for exhibitions, concerts, and corporate events.
