The Grotto, Portland
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the serene landscape of Northeast Portland, The Grotto – also known as The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother – stands as an inviting place of peace and natural beauty. This Catholic shrine, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offers visitors a unique blend of spiritual sanctuary and botanical splendor.
The Grotto was established in 1924 by Friar Ambrose Mayer, who envisioned a place where people could feel the comforting presence of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Over the years, it has become a cherished destination for both spiritual reflection and appreciation of nature.
Spanning over 62 acres, The Grotto is not only a shrine but also a botanical garden, featuring meandering pathways through lush greenery and meticulously manicured landscapes. It is renowned for its heart-stopping cliffside views and the stunning centerpiece: a 110-foot cliff with a marble statue of Mary enshrined in a cave carved out of the basalt rock.
Visitors can explore the lower level of The Grotto for free, which includes the Chapel of Mary, a gift shop, and the Stations of the Cross. The upper gardens, however, require a nominal fee to access. This area can be reached by a scenic elevator ride, which takes guests up the cliff to encounter panoramic vistas of the Columbia River Valley, the Cascade Mountains, and numerous religious and secular sculptures and artwork.
The Grotto is also known for its seasonal events, particularly the Christmas Festival of Lights, which is recognized as one of the largest Christmas choral festivals in the world. With over 160 indoor holiday concerts performed by many of the region's finest school, church, and civic choirs, The Grotto’s Christmas celebration is a heartwarming experience for all ages.
