Facts About Wiener Melange
A Wiener Melange is a delightful coffee drink that's quite similar to a cappuccino. It begins with a shot of espresso served in a large coffee cup, then is topped off with steamed milk and a layer of milk foam. There are various ways to prepare a Wiener Melange, resulting in slight variations in the ratio of coffee to milk or even some versions that include a touch of cocoa.
Interestingly, in English, the term "Cafe Vienna" and in French, "Café viennois" often refer to a different beverage: espresso con panna, which is espresso topped with whipped cream instead of milk foam. Consequently, if you order a Wiener Melange, you might sometimes receive an espresso con panna, which is known as a Franziskaner in Vienna.
The word "cappuccino" might also have Austrian origins. It could be connected to the Austrian coffee preparation called "Kapuziner" referring to the frothy hood of milk on top of the coffee. However, it is more commonly believed to be associated with the brown color of the robes worn by Capuchin monks.
