The Ampferstein is the 2556 m above sea level eastern cornerstone of the Kalkkögel in the Stubai Alps. Together with the Marchreisenspitze and the Malgrubenspitze it forms the well-known "triumvirate" above the Axamer Lizum.

To the north, the Schneiderspitze is located in front of the Ampferstein.
