Stadtpark Rapoldi, Innsbruck
Facts and practical information
Rapoldi City Park is a park in Innsbruck.
It is located in the Pradl district between the Sill River and the existing residential buildings at Leipziger Platz. After the abandonment of the old gas works, the park was extended to the north and, together with the banks of the Sill and the Inn, forms a continuous green space extending to the northeastern edge of the city. In the center of the park is the Rapoldi pond.
The park is named after the Tyrolean politician and journalist Martin Rapoldi. Rapoldi was vice mayor of Innsbruck from 1919 to 1923, and city councilor from 1923.
In the park stands to this day the Salige sculpture by Hans Plangger, designed in 1944 for the National Socialist Gauhauptstadt, completed in 1953-1954 on behalf of the Innsbruck city administration and entirely in keeping with the National Socialist image of women.
The Rapoldi City Park is located next to the Sillpark shopping center and is often mentioned in the media in connection with crime, especially drug-related offenses and the murder of a young woman in 2005. As a result, "protection zones" with extended police powers were established and parts of the park were under video surveillance. However, these measures were also criticized as not achieving their goals and as a restriction of fundamental rights.
In 2018, 72 cameras were installed in the park to raise the subjective sense of security of visitors to the park.
