Gerzkopf
Facts and practical information
The Gerzkopf is a 1728 m above sea level mountain in the Fritztaler mountains in the province of Salzburg. It is a soft-topped foothill of the Dachstein massif, forested to the summit. In mountain structure, however, the Gerzkopf massif is counted among the Fritztaler Mountains and Salzburg Slate Alps, because it forms a mid-mountain interruption between the limestone high Alps of the Dachstein and Tennengebirge, which opens like a window to the Salzburg Pre-Alps.
From Gerzkopf you have a good view of the south face of the Dachstein and the Bischofsmütze, the southern flank of the Tennengebirge, and also the main alpine ridge of the eastern Hohe Tauern and western Niedere Tauern to the south.
Around the summit there is a very rare high moor, which is especially protected as a European protected area Gerzkopf.
Just before the protected area is the shepherd's hut, which is managed during the summer. From this hut, about 400 sheep are supervised, which stay in the vicinity of the summit until the abattoir on Rupert's Day. At the summit there is a large bell that was originally intended for calling the sheep together.
