Stadionbad, Vienna
Facts and practical information
Stadionbad is one of the largest sports and leisure pools in Vienna and is located in the Prater in Vienna's 2nd district Leopoldstadt next to the Ernst Happel Stadium, which gives it its name.
Around 1925, there was still a wooded area called "Rondeaumais" on this site of the Krieau. In 1928, construction of the large sports facilities began. The green landscape of the Au was reduced as a result.
The Stadionbad was built according to plans by Otto Ernst Schweizer and opened in 1931 to create a sports center together with today's stadium and a cycling track located there. In the opening year, competitions of the Workers' Olympics held in Vienna were held here.
After the Second World War, the baths were initially only opened provisionally and only officially from May 20, 1949. In 1956/57, the entire facility was rebuilt according to designs by Theodor Schöll.
The bath is designed for 6500 visitors, but in addition there are the visitors with so-called "meadow tickets". The total area is 129,824 m², of which 6286 are covered with buildings. The guests have at their disposal 966 cabins and additionally 3332 boxes.
The bath has a 50 m swimming pool, a water polo pool and a pool reserved especially for the 10 m diving tower. There is also a wave pool with a wave machine whose wave output was greatly reduced in 2010, as well as several pools for children and two water slides.
Designed for competition purposes, the bath has a reinforced concrete grandstand with 2116 seats and standing room for more visitors. The bath also has a restaurant for 2000 guests and other catering facilities. Above the changing areas for day and seasonal guests, which also have numerous cabins, there are two sunbathing areas of about 200 m². In 2012, the area for the ladies was thoroughly modernized, and in 2013, the wooden castels of the post-war period disappeared in the men's sector as well. Meanwhile, the sanitary areas of the whole bath have been newly adapted.
Today, the bath is managed by Wiener Sportstätten Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H. and is thus indirectly a facility owned by the City of Vienna.
