Europapark, Klagenfurt
Facts and practical information
Europapark is a park with garden art in the municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Carinthia. The sculptures that can be seen in the park are protected monuments.
With around 22 hectares, the park is the largest in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and also one of the largest parks in Austria.
It is located in the immediate vicinity of Lake Wörthersee in a triangle between Klagenfurt's lido, the Lendkanal and Minimundus. The name is intended to symbolize the cosmopolitanism of the city of Klagenfurt. This is also symbolized by flags of the various partner cities, which can be seen in the Europapark.
This area was originally - like today's landscape conservation area "Lendspitz" south of the Lendkanal - a wetland due to the high groundwater level. After the Second World War, the area was drained with the rubble of the bombed city and opened as a park in 1965. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 1990, a stone sculpture was erected and dedicated to the park's founder, former mayor Hans Ausserwinkler.
Today the Europapark shows itself as a diversified recreation area for the inhabitants of the capital of Carinthia. Various free recreational facilities such as outdoor chess, the largest children's playground in Carinthia with play equipment for all ages and for every stage of development, beach volleyball court, skate park with half pipe, mini ramp and many other devices and an outdoor training park with integration of coordination and balance equipment offer something for every age group. Plans by the city of a development of the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee with a luxury hotel and indoor swimming pool were rejected.
