Facts About Pukkelpop
Pukkelpop is an unmissable annual music festival near Hasselt, Belgium, typically held in mid-to-late August. It is the second-largest music festival in Belgium after Rock Werchter and focuses on alternative music genres, including rock, pop, electronic, dance, hip-hop, punk, and heavy metal.
Founded in 1985 by the youth organization Humanistic Youth of Leopoldsburg, Pukkelpop has expanded significantly over the years. The festival has hosted iconic acts such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Metallica, and Eminem. Originally a single-day event, it has now evolved into a multi-day extravaganza with several stages and diverse music offerings.
Pukkelpop's 25th anniversary in 2010 was a significant milestone, featuring a sold-out crowd and high-profile headliners. However, the festival has faced challenges. In 2010, two musicians tragically passed away during the event. The following year, a severe thunderstorm caused tents to collapse, resulting in casualties and injuries. Consequently, the organizers were forced to cancel the remainder of the festival due to the hazardous weather conditions.
For festival-goers, Pukkelpop provides free camping facilities and convenient transportation options, including shuttle buses and trains to and from the venue. Attendees can opt for day passes or "combi" tickets that grant access to all days of the festival.
Pukkelpop also has a sister festival called Polsslag, held in Hasselt during the spring of 2008 and 2009. This one-day event featured artists such as The Breeders, Dizzee Rascal, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs across multiple stages.
