Křižovnické náměstí, Prague
Facts and practical information
Křižovnické Square in Prague is situated on the Old Town bank of the Vltava River in the close vicinity of Charles Bridge on the Royal Route. It is one of the smallest squares in Prague, yet it is one of the most visited places in the capital. In the Middle Ages, a branch of the Vltava River flowed here, separating the Křižovnický Island, from which an arch to the Old Town bank was made in the 19th century, thus enlarging the space of the square by the area next to the bridge tower. The island, like the square, is named after the monastery of the Knights of the Cross on the north side of the square, which partly stands on this island.
The current appearance of the square dates back to 1848, when it was widened and the remaining arches of Judith's Bridge were covered. The bas-relief of Bradac was moved to the present right bank wall of the square and a statue of the Emperor and King Charles IV was unveiled.
