Jerup Kirke, North Jutlandic Island
Facts and practical information
Jerup Church, located in the village of Jerup, about 12 km northwest of Frederikshavn, was built in 1888-89 as a branch church of Elling Church. The church was designed by architect F. Uldall and is clearly related to other smaller churches from the same period and built in an adapted Romanesque style.
The brickwork is red with light bands, the roof is black slate and the building rests on a granite base.
The west gable has a small octagonal tower on the ridge, where the church bell was originally hung.
In 1972 the bell was dismantled due to the danger of falling and was placed in a bell tower southwest of the church.
The interior of the church has an unfinished beamed ceiling, is whitewashed, sparsely furnished and the floor is covered with red-brown tiles.
The church originally had an altarpiece painted in 1900 by H. Agersnap. It was later replaced by a painting by Svend Engelund.
In 1897 the church underwent extensive restoration due to damage from a lightning strike.
