The church of the Emm is at the same time the parish church of Metzeral-Sondernach, the place of a secular pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin and finally a memorial dedicated to the soldiers of the Great War fallen in Alsace and in the Vosges.

The name of Emm comes from the name of the hill on which the sanctuary is perched, evoking the legend of Emma and Roland of Roncesvalles.
