Great Kurultáj

The Great Kurultáj, often simply called Kurultáj, is a vibrant celebration held in Bugac, Hungary, during the first week of August. This traditional event brings together people with Central Asian nomadic roots, aiming to preserve and promote the rich equestrian culture and traditions of Hungarians, Eastern Turkic peoples, and Altaic peoples.

The first Kurultáj took place in Kazakhstan in 2007, with Hungary hosting its inaugural event in 2008. Since then, it has played a crucial role in reviving Altaic self-awareness and cultural pride.

Kurultáj is a magnet for professional horsemen and equestrian enthusiasts. Attendees can enjoy a variety of thrilling activities, including parades of horsemen, horse races, traditional horseback wrestling, and related tournaments. One of the unique highlights is the kokpar game, a strategic team sport on horseback that Hungary uniquely preserves in Europe.

The event attracts participants from a diverse array of ethnic groups, including those from Adygea, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, South Korea, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and more. The term "kurultaj" in Turkic languages means "meeting of the tribes" reminiscent of historical gatherings where tribes would convene to make crucial decisions, particularly concerning military strategies.

Kurultáj has continued to thrive over the years, with annual celebrations drawing large crowds. For instance, the 2013 Kurultáj took place from August 9 to 11, and the 2014 event was also held in Bugac. In 2015, the Hungarian Turan Foundation organized the event, dubbed Ancestors Day, with support from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA). This edition saw representatives from both Hungary and Turkey. The 2016 Kurultáj was another grand affair, held in Bugac from August 12 to 14.
