Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Kolkata

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple is a revered sanctuary and an emblem of devotion nestled in the city of Kolkata, India. This architectural marvel is dedicated to the goddess Kali, known as Bhavatarini, the liberator of the universe. Constructed in 1855 by the affluent widow Rani Rashmoni, the temple stands on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, beckoning devotees and tourists alike with its spiritual aura and historical significance.

The temple complex is a splendid example of the traditional 'Nava-ratna' or nine spires style of Bengal architecture. It sprawls over an extensive area, featuring a large courtyard surrounded by twelve identical Shiva temples laid out in a row, a Radha-Krishna temple, a bathing ghat on the river, a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni, and the main temple.

The main edifice reaches a height of over 100 feet, and the nine spires that adorn the structure are symbolic of the different forms of the goddess. The sanctum houses an idol of Kali, standing on the chest of her consort, Lord Shiva, and is a powerful representation of feminine divinity.

The temple is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a mystic and yogi, who served as its chief priest. His spiritual discourses and interfaith beliefs drew many disciples, including Swami Vivekananda, who later founded the Ramakrishna Mission.

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple is open to visitors throughout the year and is particularly crowded during the annual Kali Puja and on Tuesdays, considered auspicious to the goddess Kali.
